describe my leave it was one whirl + I lost all count of time. I met Daisy + George + had the time of my life. I should have left Victoria station at 6:30 AM on Wed. 26th but did not leave untill Friday the 28th. (two clear days overdue) making my leave a seventeen day one, as my leave warrant was for fifteen days on account of Xmas day being my fourteenth day.

Friday Dec 28th I have slept in the Salvation army doss house + had breakfast. I get my leave warrant stamped leave Victoria at 7:30 to arrive at Boulogne at 10. we are then marched to a rest camp + get some M + V. this camp is a terrible place, on the top of a big hill. deep snow, wind + rotten Saturday Dec 29 We get up at 1 AM. + pack up + land at Boulogne station + leave about 5 A.M. the trip

Winter 1917-18

The winter of 1917-18 is one of the coldest in years. Both sides use the lull in major operations to prepare for what everyone expects will be a decisive year. Germany is racing against time. American troops are arriving in France at an accelerating rate: tens of thousands per month at first, rising to over 250,000 per month by summer. Germany must attack before American numbers become overwhelming.
