to Bethune was a very rotten one in truck + no door. snowing + cold + packed in tight. Oh hell! I walk from Bethune to Fresincourt about eleven miles + arrive at camp about 4:30, the boys give me a very noisy reception but soon found me a flop + fixed me up. as I was waiting after supper Bert tells me to report to the orderly room next morning as “Ignots” Harvey has gone away on a draft. Sunday Dec 30. Orderly room all day, don’t do much except filing Dec 31. New Years Eve. Cold + dry - Orderly room. fairly busy. light supper + bit of a concert, run into a watch night service. lights out 12:45.

1918 begins

January 1918 opens with both sides preparing for the decisive year. Germany plans a massive spring offensive using troops freed from the Eastern Front. The Allies know an attack is coming but not where or when. The British Army is actually weaker than a year ago. Casualties in 1917 have not been fully replaced, and several divisions have been disbanded. The army that must withstand the German blow is stretched thin across a longer front.
