meal + finish up at Mathias. the girl that sings so nicely. Very few of the boys are clear sober. but all are in by time Capt Shaw. Jim White + Wilf Dodds. + Jack Tait are very decent to us. + leave us alone. Monday Nov 19. Jim Parnell. Greheme + Briman Len Pratt + I again go up to Castre, we have Hank Hawes out with us to day he was sick yesterday. we go to Castre again + celebrate a Battle of Castre. we do ourselves pretty good + have a real good time

Tuesday Nov. 20. We get up early leave our farm billets at 8:15 AM. we march about three miles. then we get busses + get a nice ride to Merville, a decent sized town but dead, we have a Hell of a job to locate a grub stake sleep on a pile of hay. Wed Nov 21. We leave about noon + march about 10 Kilos to a place near Burnes, we do the march in about 2½ hours. the 13th put up another good feed for us. I a billet in a loft over some

November 1917 closes a year of mixed results for the Allies. Vimy Ridge and Messines were clear victories. Passchendaele was won at terrible cost. The Nivelle Offensive was a disaster. Russia has left the war. The German High Command is already planning a massive spring offensive for 1918, using divisions freed from the Eastern Front. The race is on: can Germany win before American forces arrive in strength?
