Battle of Cambrai begins

On November 20, 1917, the British launch a surprise attack at Cambrai using 476 tanks, the first massed tank assault in history. With no preliminary bombardment to warn the defenders, the tanks crush German wire and cross trenches. British forces advance five miles in hours. Church bells ring in Britain to celebrate. But the tanks suffer heavy losses: 179 are knocked out or break down on the first day. On November 30, a German counterattack recaptures most of the ground.
