After Passchendaele

The Canadian Corps is relieved from the Ypres salient in mid-November. The Third Battle of Ypres has ended with the ridge in Allied hands, but at enormous cost: 275,000 British and Dominion casualties for an advance of five miles. The village of Passchendaele, taken at such cost, will be abandoned without a fight during the German spring offensive of 1918. The ground gained in four months is given up in days, partly through deliberate tactical withdrawal as the Allies shorten their lines.
