Currie prepares

The Canadian Corps relieves the ANZAC Corps at Ypres on October 18. Currie insists on thorough preparation before attacking: new roads, improved gun positions, repaired tramlines for supply. Hundreds of thousands of shells must be moved forward. The front line the Canadians inherit has seen little net gain despite repeated fighting since 1915. Years of costly battles at Ypres have produced a devastated landscape with no intact trenches, no dugouts, and no cover except shell holes and German concrete bunkers.
