No passes issued for Bruay. Stan. Pratt, Aly + Hal + I go to B. Jolly good supper at an old girls house, go to concert by the “Maple Leaves”. Very good show. Leave at 8:35 for Viel-Fort chateau where our camp is, we get lost going across country + miss roll call as we are late. R.S.M says O.K. When we get to camp we learn they are pulling out early next morning. Cam. Billy Beck + + Corpl Tait are to form the rearguard party.

Thursday Oct 11. Rise 3:30 A.M. The rearguard party finish loading a waggon + hang around. The boys left the chateau to entrain for Thermes at 7:30 AM. but were held at Houdain siding until 11:30 AM. The four of us left at the Chateau clean up. collect our rations + go into the chateau to clean up the kitchen + the officers qrs. Failed attacks at Passchendaele

The attacks of October 9 and 12 at Ypres have failed. Australian and New Zealand forces advanced into the mud and were cut down by German fire from concrete pillboxes. The battlefield is a swamp of water-filled craters with no cover. The ANZAC Corps has suffered heavily and cannot continue. Haig turns to the Canadians as his last fresh formation capable of taking the ridge before winter.
