leave Gd Servins for Chateau Viel Fort near Douvon (between Douvay + Haudain) we go thro Freisencourt. 4½ miles full pack in 2½ hours only 1 rest of 10 min. bully bread dinner + supper then go to bed in an old barn with neither doors or windows. Stan + I double up to get warm. Monday Oct 8. Guard to keep out female hawkers, they sure keep me busy. 9 AM to 11:30 AM. + 2 to 4:30 P.M. + go on again at 7 P.M in a pouring rain + a pitch black night. One more of Billy Hunters “Orders is orders”. he is clear “nutty”.

Tuesday Oct 9. Loaf all the A.M Maconochie for dinner + I get a dose of poisoning. Cam. + Harry Foeget also have it but they are able to throw theirs up. I don’t + spend the rest of the day in agony. I take a bunch of physic Willy Dodds fixes me up.

Wed Oct 10. Stomach ache + a head ache. clean up for kit inspection at 2 PM, too much rain so the inspection is called off. Parade at 2 PM

Canadians move to Ypres

In early October 1917, the Canadian Corps begins transferring from the Lens sector to Flanders. Field Marshal Haig has ordered them to take Passchendaele ridge, a task that has eluded British and ANZAC forces since July. Corps commander Arthur Currie protests the order, arguing the objective is not worth the cost. He predicts 16,000 casualties. Haig insists. Currie begins planning a methodical four-phase operation.
