Sat Oct 13 Feel “jake” after another civilised sleep. The maids feed us good. Jack pulls a bad break on the Countess mistaking her for another servant. we eat good all day Capt D.E Clarke + his batman are also with the rearguard Capt D.B. has a pretty bad quinsey + is feeling jolly sick.

The 3rd Can Fld Amb come + look over the place + tell us we can leave. we pile up all the remaining junk into the car then jump on + off we go. we do not know anything about our unit except that they went to Thermes. D.B’s temp is 104°. we pull out at 4:15 PM. We go to Aire first passing thro Lillers, then we make for Thermes. by this time it is pitch dark + raining like the mischief at Thermes we learn the unit was only there one night + we start out to find a Roman Road they are supposed to

Italy defeated at Caporetto

On October 24, German and Austro-Hungarian forces smash through Italian lines at the Battle of Caporetto. The Italian Army suffers over 300,000 casualties: 10,000 killed, 30,000 wounded, and 265,000 taken prisoner. The Italian front collapses. British and French divisions are rushed to Italy to stabilize the line. The disaster at Caporetto adds urgency to the Ypres offensive; Haig argues that pressure must be maintained in Flanders to prevent Germany from exploiting success elsewhere.
