The war at this time

Air war continues

The air war over the Western Front has shifted since Bloody April. New British aircraft (the SE.5 and Sopwith Camel) can match German fighters. The balance of losses is more even, though the fighting remains deadly. Observation balloons are prime targets. Filled with hydrogen, they burn spectacularly when hit. Balloon observers carry parachutes and frequently must jump. Attacking balloons is extremely dangerous, defended by anti-aircraft guns and fighters.
