September ends with British forces poised for what they hope will be a decisive blow at Ypres. Three successful attacks in three weeks have restored confidence after the disasters of August. But time is running out. The autumn rains are overdue. Once they begin, the cratered battlefield will return to the impassable swamp of August. Everything depends on the weather holding for a few more weeks.
