Momentum at Ypres
Late September 1917 brings optimism to the Ypres offensive. The battles of Menin Road and Polygon Wood have succeeded. German commanders are alarmed at their mounting losses in counterattacks against prepared British positions. Another attack is planned for October 4 at Broodseinde. If successful, British forces will be within striking distance of Passchendaele ridge (the high ground that dominates the salient).
