The war at this time

Late August at Ypres

Late August sees continued fighting around Ypres as General Plumer prepares a new series of attacks. His approach emphasizes careful preparation: advancing only as far as artillery can effectively support, then consolidating before the next push. Germany introduces mustard gas on the Western Front in July 1917. Unlike earlier gases that affect the lungs, mustard gas burns skin and causes blindness. It contaminates ground for days, making captured positions hazardous to hold.
