line. we go to McGill relay + stay all night. McGill is on the far side of Vimy ridge, it was an R.A.P. of Fritz, plenty of room for 50 men. Very duff to our own on the other side of the ridge. Friday May 18 Heralds Post sends to our station for a squad. J. Tait. A Hamilton. J Shackley + I get sent from Heralds to McGill is like every other trip on the far side of the ridge + that is in full view of Fritz. Aluck + Shack are sent to No 1 R.A.P. near Petit Vimy. Jack Tait + I spend the day at Heralds, working between Heralds + Paulins. Paulins is in the town of Angres. Go to bed at 10:30 PM. called at 11 PM + take a stretcher case to Paulins, Find ‘Fin’ under the bridge with his pocket lamp. going + Fritz promptly shells us to beat the band, + we leave in a hurry, bed again at 1:30.

Nivelle sacked

On May 15, General Nivelle is relieved of command and replaced by General Philippe Petain. The change reflects the complete failure of the spring offensive and the spreading crisis in the French Army. Petain immediately adopts a defensive strategy. He visits units personally, improves conditions, grants more leave, and promises no more suicidal attacks. But the mutinies continue to spread through May.
