Tuesday May 15. Hand in all but the blanket, ready to pull out. cold night. Wed May 16. Paid- Two squads up the line. A Section return to Gd Servins from Estrée Cauchy + naturally celebrate. Tom + some of the boys are half stewed for the first post band. get away with it. Thursday May 17. Mombulance leaves Gd Servins at 9 AM for Hospital corner, Play in the band.

Convoys begin

The first experimental convoy of merchant vessels leaves Gibraltar on May 10, 1917. Escorted shipping proves immediately effective; losses to convoyed ships drop dramatically compared to vessels sailing independently. On May 24, Britain formally introduces the convoy system for Atlantic crossings. Groups of 10-50 merchant ships travel together under escort by cruisers, destroyers, and armed trawlers. The U-boat threat begins to recede.
