The Zimmermann Telegram revealed
On March 1, American newspapers publish the Zimmermann Telegram, a secret German communication intercepted by British intelligence. The telegram proposes a military alliance with Mexico against the United States, offering the return of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The revelation outrages American public opinion.
