& run it on into a watch night service. I am on the floor all the time, feel jolly sick sleep quite a bit during the concert, Major Bell reads a letter from Hank Gordon, he just gets boozology in time to save him from being a battallion M.O. or some such job. Some of his pets look like loosing their B.P. jobs. I guess he has lost his political pull now.

New Years Day - 1917. Get up for breakfast, first grub for 48 hours, feel a little better, wrote to Belle & to Bill Tuesday & Wed Jan 2 & 3. Feel pretty sick still but not so bad. Thursday Jan 4 Go up to the A.D.S at Ablaine St Lazarre on a working party, cleaning out a cellar to make it into a dressing station, & make a slide for stretchers to slide

1917 begins

The new year brings no respite. The Western Front remains locked in stalemate. Germany is debating whether to launch unrestricted submarine warfare. The decision, made on January 9, will risk American entry into the war. In Russia, the Tsar's government is weakening; revolution will come in March. The Canadian Corps continues preparations for the Vimy assault. Advanced Dressing Stations are being established in cellars and dugouts at the foot of the ridge. Tunnels are being dug to shelter troops before the attack. Every detail is being planned.
