The war at this time

The war in late 1916

As 1916 ends, the war has reached a stalemate. The Somme and Verdun have cost over two million casualties combined without decisive result. Germany is planning unrestricted submarine warfare. The Allies are planning new offensives for 1917. In the Vimy sector, the Canadian Corps is taking over trenches previously held by French units. The positions are poorly maintained: shallow trenches, few dugouts, unburied dead. The Canadians will spend the winter improving the defences and preparing for the spring offensive.
