The war at this time

The Somme winds down

The Battle of the Somme is entering its final phase. Heavy rains have made large-scale operations nearly impossible. The battlefield is a sea of mud. Attacks continue on a smaller scale: consolidating gains, straightening the line, capturing specific positions. The Canadian Corps still holds Regina Trench. The eastern portion remains contested. Desire Trench, the next German defensive line, is the next objective. But the weather is deteriorating and the troops are exhausted. The offensive will continue until November 18.
