The war at this time

Pozières

Pozières was a village on the Albert-Bapaume road. Australian divisions captured it in July-August 1916 at a cost of 23,000 casualties in seven weeks. The village no longer exists; it has been shelled into the earth. The ruins and cellars now serve as forward positions. Bell's Pit, a wine cellar in the Pozières ruins, serves as a forward dressing station. Wounded are brought here from the Regimental Aid Posts at the front line before being evacuated further back to Casualty Clearing Stations.
