The German advance

Operation Michael pushes the British back up to 40 miles, more ground than either side has gained in any offensive since 1914. The old Somme battlefields, won at such cost in 1916, are lost in days. The crisis forces the Allies to finally unify their command. On March 26, French General Ferdinand Foch is appointed to coordinate Allied forces on the Western Front, a role expanded to full supreme command on April 3. It is the first time in the war that a single commander directs British, French, and American armies.
