Operation Michael

On March 21, 1918, Germany launches Operation Michael, the opening blow of the Spring Offensive. Over 6,400 guns fire 3.5 million shells along a 46-mile front. Sixty-five German divisions attack 26 British divisions in thick morning fog. The British suffer 38,500 casualties on the first day, including 21,000 taken prisoner. German stormtroopers bypass strongpoints and penetrate deep into the rear. It is the worst day for the British Army since the Somme.
