The scenes were too awful to think of when dawn came + we could see other fellows + mules + horses all along the route we had been working on all night, we had to clear all the nine during the night for the big show was to start at daybreak the next morning. + the tarpaulin at the back of the pill box at the crest of the ridge + Fritz absolutely ignors our red cross on it.

Tuesday Oct 30. We just get finished by 10 minutes to five the barrage is to go over at daybreak, there is no room for us behind the pill box + we get into a hole dug into the ground we watch Fritz S.O.S go up

Second assault on Passchendaele

On October 30, the 3rd and 4th Canadian Divisions attack again. The advance is smaller than October 26, but the Canadians reach the outskirts of Passchendaele village in a driving rainstorm. Casualties for this phase are heavy. The 3rd and 4th Divisions are now exhausted. The 1st and 2nd Divisions will take over for the final push to capture the village and the ridge beyond.
