Eve of the first assault

The first Canadian attack on Passchendaele is set for October 26. The 3rd and 4th Canadian Divisions will advance behind a creeping barrage. To their right, Australians hold the flank; to the left, British troops. Conditions at the front are unlike anything the Canadians have faced before. There are no trenches, only shell holes full of water. The only shelter is German concrete pillboxes, with reinforced concrete walls typically 1 to 1.5 meters thick, making them difficult to destroy even with direct hits.
