The war at this time

Before the Canadian assault

The Canadian Corps spends a week building infrastructure before attacking. Roads are laid over the mud, tramlines extended, and gun positions improved. German artillery fires constantly on these preparations, causing steady casualties. The attack plan calls for four limited advances over three weeks. Each push will advance only a few hundred yards: far enough to take the next line of pillboxes, close enough for artillery to support. The 3rd and 4th Divisions will attack first; the 1st and 2nd will follow.
