At 9 AM Merry + Stan take out a case, we get no more cases until 8:15 P.M. Stan + I run him down on the light railway. I again do the first gas guard, 4½ hours I write to Lou + Belle. Sat Sept 22nd Sleep from 1 AM to 2 AM then take down a case. on our return I find Charlie Duncan the F.F. is at Burkes Hole + is to be added to my squad. the ration wagon comes up on a train at Midnight. Success at Ypres
The Battle of Menin Road on September 20 is followed by the Battle of Polygon Wood on September 26. Both are successful limited attacks using Plumer's bite-and-hold tactics: advance a thousand yards, consolidate, let the Germans counterattack into prepared defenses. The dry weather holds. For the first time in months, the Ypres offensive is making steady progress. Plans are made to continue the advance toward Passchendaele ridge.
