American troops arrive

The first American troops land in France in late June 1917. General John Pershing insists that American forces must fight as an independent army rather than being fed piecemeal into British and French units. This means months of training before Americans will see combat. The US Army of June 1917 numbers only 127,000 men. Building an army of millions will take well over a year.
