Planning the Flanders offensive

After Messines, the British prepare for a major offensive around Ypres. Field Marshal Haig believes a breakthrough here could reach the Belgian ports used by German submarines. With the French Army still recovering from the spring mutinies, Britain must carry the offensive burden. General John Pershing arrives in France on June 13 with the first American troops. But the US Army is tiny and untrained; American forces will not fight in significant numbers until 1918.
