The Nivelle Offensive fails

The French offensive on the Aisne continues but falls far short of its objectives. By April 25, the main attack is suspended. French casualties from April 16-25 total 118,000, including 28,000 killed. The promised 48-hour victory has become another attritional disaster. The shock of failure after such high expectations devastates French Army morale. The first incidents of collective disobedience begin in late April. Soldiers remain willing to defend their trenches but refuse orders to attack.
