The war at this time

Operation Alberich complete

The German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line is complete. The operation has shortened the German front by 25 miles and freed 13-14 divisions for the reserve. The Allies have occupied the abandoned territory but gained nothing of strategic value. The new German position is formidable. Concrete bunkers, deep dugouts, dense wire entanglements, and carefully sited machine-gun positions. It will resist all attacks in 1917 and only fall in September 1918 during the final Allied offensive.
