December 1916
The Western Front is quiet as winter sets in. Both sides are exhausted from the Somme. In Britain, political crisis leads to Lloyd George replacing Asquith as Prime Minister on December 7. In Germany, the military leadership is pressing the Kaiser to authorize unrestricted submarine warfare, a decision that will come in January. The Canadian Corps continues its move to the Vimy sector. Units rotate between rest areas and the front line, holding trenches and conducting raids to gather intelligence on German defences. The assault on Vimy Ridge is being planned for spring 1917.
