The war at this time

A rare success on the Somme

On July 14, four British divisions capture Bazentin Ridge in a dawn attack. Fierce fighting extends into the adjacent village of Longueval. It is one of the few successes in an otherwise disastrous offensive. But the opportunity is not exploited, and the battle settles into a grinding war of attrition that will last until November. The Canadians at Ypres are preparing to move. In late August, the Canadian Corps will be transferred to the Somme sector, where they will fight through the autumn.
