The Battle of the Ancre Heights
The assault on Regina Trench is part of the larger Battle of the Ancre Heights (October 1 - November 11). British forces are attacking along the entire Somme front, trying to capture remaining German strongpoints before winter ends the campaign. Simultaneously, the II Corps attacks Stuff Trench to the west. The French are fighting at Sailly-Saillisel to the south. These coordinated attacks aim to straighten the Allied line and secure better positions for the winter.
