swiped my last drink.) we have a foot inspection. quite a few have sore feet & there are many with sore shoulders from their packs, it took our seven cars five trips each to clean up the fellows that dropped out on the march during this, our first days heavy march. we be marching with the 12th Brigade About 100 of us put into a hay loft & get pork & beans for supper. Take a walk round Hazebrouck drop in & see a beautiful church for a few minutes. back to hay loft by 8 PM & asleep by 8.15.

Monday Sept 25 Reveille 5.30, breakfast 6 AM. Pork & beans for breakfast, wash up & hang around feel fine & dandy. quite equal to marching, my little toe is a trifle sore. Leave Hazebrouck 10 AM. march until noon, arrive at Arques at 6.30 PM. 6½ hours marching for 12½ miles. full pack, another bunch of the brigade dropped out, a number of our own boys quit to day Very very hot all day Our

The Battle of Thiepval Ridge

The Battle of Morval begins on September 25, followed by the Battle of Thiepval Ridge on September 26. British and Canadian forces attack German positions that have held since July 1. The village of Thiepval, fortified with deep dugouts and concrete bunkers, finally falls on September 26. The Canadian Corps is heavily engaged. The attacks succeed in straightening the line and capturing several fortified villages, but at the usual cost: thousands of casualties for gains measured in hundreds of yards.
